It’s a ‘Smart’ move Erewash Borough Council’s Pride in Erewash Campaign is spearheading a new move to stamp out the menace of cigarette butts and chewing gum dropped on pavements in Ilkeston and Long Eaton town centres. State-of-the-art ‘Smartbins’, which have been specifically developed for the safe and proper disposal of gum and cigarette ends, will be sited in 18 ‘hotspot’ locations around Long Eaton and Ilkeston shopping centres at the end of this month. Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, says: “These bins will be conveniently located and will mean there is now absolutely no excuse for smokers to throw their cigarette ends on the floor or for people to drop chewed gum on the pavements. “The move should be seen as a clear demonstration of this Council’s continued commitment to cracking down on litter of all kinds. I know the majority of residents share our outrage at those irresponsible people who think it is acceptable to dump litter and leave it for someone else to clean up. “Well our message is a simple one – litter will not be tolerated in Erewash, we have provided the bins so use them. We will continue to take a hard line approach on littering and if any of our wardens see someone throwing rubbish to the floor, they will have no hesitation in issuing a Fixed Penalty Notice.”
The Council’s Pride in Erewash Campaign is the driving force behind the installation of the bins – which will be sited on the eve of the Campaign’s major ‘Borough Blitz’ event. The Blitz will run throughout March and will see residents, groups and schools get involved in litter picks and other clean-up events throughout Erewash. The Council’s 24-hour confidential PRIDE-line is an answer phone service which allows residents to report environment offences and offenders without the need to speak to a member of staff and with no requirement to leave their personal details.
